Planning the Perfect Peak District Walking Stag Weekend?
The Peak District is one of the UK’s best destinations for a walking stag weekend. Whether you’re looking for breath taking views, a decent challenge, traditional country pubs or simply a great excuse to get the lads together for a weekend away, there’s a walk to suit every group.
With hundreds of routes to choose from, deciding where to go can be difficult. Some are perfect for a relaxed morning walk followed by a pub lunch, while others offer a little more adventure before heading back to your accommodation or onto your next activity.
At Hard Days Knight, we’ve been organising stag weekends in the Peak District for over 15 years, so we’ve put together five of our favourite walks for stag groups, along with a few local tips to help you make the most of your weekend.
1. Mam Tor & The Great Ridge
Distance: 3–7 miles (depending on your chosen route)
If you’re only going to do one walk in the Peak District, make it Mam Tor. It’s one of the most iconic walks in the National Park, offering incredible panoramic views across the Hope Valley and a real sense of achievement when you reach the top.
One of the reasons we recommend Mam Tor for a stag weekend is its flexibility. If you’re after a shorter walk, simply head to the summit and back. For more of a challenge, continue along the stunning Great Ridge towards Lose Hill before looping back to Castleton.
Afterwards, Castleton is the perfect place to reward yourselves with a pub lunch and a few well-earned drinks.

We recently walked Mam Tor ourselves on a Sunday morning and by 9:30am the main National Trust car park was already almost full. If you’re travelling in several cars, arrive early or consider arranging group transport. Don’t forget an extra layer too, even on warm days the summit can be surprisingly windy!
2. Thor’s Cave & Manifold Valley
Distance: Around 5–6 miles depending on your route
If your stag group wants something that feels like a proper Peak District adventure, Thor’s Cave is a great choice.
Set high above the Manifold Valley, the huge natural limestone cave is one of the area’s most impressive landmarks. Reaching the cave involves a climb, but you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views across the valley and one of the best group photo spots on this list.
Combine Thor’s Cave with the surrounding Manifold Valley for a longer circular walk and you’ve got a brilliant morning or afternoon out before heading for a country pub.

✔ Easy to make a day of it – Combine the walk with lunch, drinks or another Peak District activity.
HDK Local Tip
The climb up to Thor’s Cave is steep and rocky in places and can become slippery when wet, so decent footwear is definitely recommended. It’s also another location where having group transport makes life much easier.
3. Monsal Trail
Distance: 2–8+ miles (walk as little or as much as you like)
If your stag group likes the idea of getting outdoors but isn’t quite ready to conquer a mountain, the Monsal Trail is a brilliant option.
Following a former railway line, this traffic-free trail takes you through impressive tunnels, across the famous Monsal Viaduct and through some fantastic Peak District countryside.
Because it’s largely flat, it’s ideal for mixed-ability groups and particularly good if you want a sociable walk where everyone can chat rather than spending the morning struggling up hills.

Fancy something a little quicker? Bikes are available to hire along the Monsal Trail, making this a great option if some of the group would rather cycle. You can also combine your day with a stop in Bakewell for food and drinks.
4. Ladybower Reservoir Circular
Distance: 3–8 miles (lots of route options)
For spectacular water views, forests and plenty of route options, Ladybower Reservoir is hard to beat.
The wide paths and flexible routes make it particularly good for larger stag groups, while the surrounding hills and reservoir provide some incredible scenery.
You can keep things relatively relaxed or extend the route if your group wants more of a challenge, making Ladybower an easy option to build into a bigger Peak District day out.

Ladybower gets busy during weekends and school holidays, so an earlier start is worthwhile. For larger stag groups, arranging transport also means nobody has to worry about parking or driving afterwards.
5. Curbar Edge & Baslow
Distance: 4–6 miles
If your group wants big Peak District views without committing to a full day’s hike, Curbar Edge is a brilliant choice.
The dramatic gritstone edge offers some of the best viewpoints in the Peak District and links easily with neighbouring Froggatt Edge to create a fantastic circular route.
Finish in the pretty village of Baslow, where you’ll find some excellent pubs and places to eat – exactly what you need after a few hours out on the hills.

✔ Quieter than some hotspots – A great alternative to the busiest trails.
✔ Fantastic circular routes – Choose a route to suit your group’s pace and plans.

✔ A proper Peak District experience – Big scenery without needing to spend the entire day hiking.

Visit later in the afternoon for fantastic views across the valley before heading into Baslow for dinner and drinks.
Things to Know Before You Go
Looking for an alternative stag do idea that doesn’t cost a fortune? A Peak District walk is a brilliant way to get everyone together, enjoy some incredible scenery and still leave plenty in the budget for activities, food and a few beers afterwards.
A little planning will make the day much easier.
Don’t rely on parking
Popular Peak District walking spots can fill up quickly, particularly at weekends. Trying to find spaces for several cars isn’t the best way to start a stag do.
HDK Tip: Arrive early or organise group transport to and from your walk. Everyone travels together, nobody has to drive and you can head straight to the pub afterwards.
Book the pub before you walk
There’s nothing better than finishing a Peak District walk with a proper pub lunch and a well-earned pint, but don’t assume a country pub can accommodate a large stag group at short notice.
HDK Tip: Choose your finishing point first and book your table in advance, then plan your walking route around it.
Come prepared
You don’t need to spend a fortune on walking gear, but decent footwear, a waterproof and an extra layer are worth bringing. Peak District weather can change surprisingly quickly, particularly on exposed routes such as Mam Tor and Curbar Edge.
Think beyond the obvious
The most famous Peak District walk isn’t necessarily the best one for your group. Busy locations such as Dovedale can become crowded, particularly on sunny weekends.
